Kuehne+Nagel cargo secured with AmSafe Bridport’s Pallet Net Zero® onboard Virgin Atlantic’s Flight100

The world’s first transatlantic 100% SAF powered flight by a commercial airline

On November 28, 2023, the world’s first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) powered transatlantic flight by a commercial airline successfully landed at New York’s JFK airport after its departure from London Heathrow.

Kuehne+Nagel, a leader in sustainable logistics, actively engages in projects that encourage and promote the use of sustainable fuels within the logistics sector. As part of its efforts, Kuehne+Nagel secured the available cargo space on this SAF-powered flight.

AmSafe Bridport, world leaders in highly engineered textile solutions, provided their Pallet Net Zero® to secure the cargo on board Flight 100. The innovative Pallet Net Zero® net used in this historic flight, weighs nine kilograms, which is less than half the weight of a conventional net, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and a reduced carbon footprint whilst being easier to handle by ground operators. Manufactured from sustainable sources at AmSafe Bridport’s solar panelled factory, the net is certified and proven in service.

Adam Polley, AmSafe Bridport Senior Sales Manager said, “We are thrilled to be part of this ground breaking Virgin Atlantic flight powered by sustainable aviation fuel. At AmSafe Bridport, we continue to look at ways of reducing the weight of our products to contribute to sustainable air travel. Pallet Net Zero® represents a significant step forward in meeting our customers’ sustainability goals.”

Yngve Ruud, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel responsible for Air Logistics comments: “This is a historic moment in our collective journey towards sustainable aviation and we are very proud to represent the air cargo industry on the world’s first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel transatlantic flight by a commercial airline. It is an honour to support this Virgin Atlantic led consortium, pushing the boundaries of decarbonisation in aviation.”

Kuehne+Nagel is committed to the science-based targets to decarbonise the logistics sector and drive the change towards a zero-carbon future. This flight represents the next step in sustainable aviation by demonstrating the potential of using SAF as a 100% drop-in replacement for fossil fuel.

Fabiano Piccinno, Global Head of Sustainability Air Logistics at Kuehne+Nagel commented, “We’re proud to be part of this historic flight and to have our valuable cargo secured by Amsafe’s Pallet Net Zero® net. We believe in a 360-degree approach to sustainability where we look at improvement areas throughout the entire Air Logistics value chain, and this is a perfect example because we are not only promoting the use of more sustainable fuel and materials but we are also reducing the fuel need at the same time.”

The Virgin Atlantic led consortium, joint funded by the UK Department for Transport, includes Rolls Royce, Boeing, University of Sheffield, Imperial College London, and Rocky Mountain Institute.

The SAF used to power the two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is produced by Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) and Synthetic Aromatic Kerosine (SAK) at an 88% HEFA and 12% SAK blend ratio.
