AIR FRANCE-KLM has cut its carbon dioxide emissions and netted a useful saving in annual fuel costs by adopting revolutionary new lightweight cargo nets.

Just one new lightweight net will save Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo more than 210 gallons of kerosene fuel per year.

That means CO2 emissions will be more than 2.5 tonnes less per net, per year. The lightweight nets are made from an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene – described as the strongest fibre in the world – and weigh around nine kilos, half as much as traditional cargo nets.

Produced by AmSafe Bridport, the nets will in future be used on all aircraft operated by Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo.

There are more advantages to the nets than emissions savings. Operatives will be able to handle them more easily and safely, and because the nets are more damage-resistant than polyester versions, they require around half as much maintenance, says a statement.
