AmSafe Bridport has an opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our successful company based at our head office in Bridport Dorset.

This vacancy would suit applicants from a mechanical engineering background with an HNC/HND or Degree level qualification in Mechanical Engineering and good working knowledge of Solidworks, CATIA and DDM. Some aerospace experience would be ideal but applicants with experience of highly regulated industries such as rail or nuclear could also be a good fit.

Job Purpose :

Provide engineering assistance and support to the Lead Engineer of the assigned business unit / product line in the delivery of projects and programmes and the innovation and development of new products whilst continuously developing own engineering and project management skills to ensure both are current and fit for purpose and relevant to the Company’s dynamic engineering and commercial context.

Lead, or lead aspects of, the innovation and development of new products, being supported by the Lead Engineer. Ensuring the on-time delivery of projects and programs, whilst continuously developing own engineering and project management skills to ensure both are current and fit for purpose and relevant to the Company’s dynamic engineering and commercial context.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Undertake design work in accordance with the parameters set out by the Lead Engineer.  This will include analysis via hand or Finite Element Analysis (FEA), 2D drawing, 3D CAD, Solidworks, DDM, PDM and the production of reports/documentation to satisfy the needs of the project (often to comply with the regulations of the aviation industry).
  • Conduct regular project and programme reviews, reporting to and updating key stakeholders and Customers.
  • Participate in / supervise the manufacture of prototypes and trials in which the physical testing of the prototypes / samples is not uncommon.
  • Maintain accurate, timely records of hours worked on each project.
  • Participate in the initial design, estimating and review of assigned projects.
  • Undertake design work in accordance with the parameters set out in the initial design review.
  • Provide technical support to team members with less experience.
  • Ensure tasks adhere to the Engineering Work Instructions.
  • Ensure all project tasks are carried out in accordance with the Company operating standards and procedures and in compliance with regulatory requirements where applicable.
  • Achieve deadlines on tasks assigned through the Enquiry Review Process.
  • Contribute to the production of KPI’s and identification of Root Cause analysis.
  • Perform any other task necessary for the effective running of the department.
  • Continually improve own engineering capabilities by means of studying technical journals, attending exhibitions, visiting customers, attending courses etc.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and support the continuous improvement programme.
  • Promote a culture of co-operation and high morale within the area of responsibility.
  • Comply with Health and Safety, Quality and all relevant legal and company policy and procedures.      
  • Perform all other duties as required, directed, or needed to achieve business goals.

  • The jobholder requires a sound knowledge of the products, materials, manufacturing capabilities and market place in which the company is operating.

Physical Demands

  • Physical demands are moderate factor of this role.  The jobholder is required to carry out testing and operate relevant machinery and tooling.  Sufficient manual dexterity is required to operate a keyboard effectively.


  • A valid driving licence and willingness to travel worldwide is required.
Specific Skill Requirements:


  • The role requires an educational standard to minimum HNC/HND and, preferably, to Degree level in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.


  • With an HNC/HND, six to eight years’ experience or, with a Degree, a minimum of two years’ work experience gained in an engineering environment is essential. 
  • Experience of FEA and CAD, Solidworks, CATIA and DDM is desirable.
  • A valid driving licence and a willingness to travel in the UK and abroad are also required.

Numeric Ability

  • Required to have above average numeric skills and able to understand complex formulae.
  • Required to provide accurate documentation and to analyse information for reports.

  • Accountable to Lead Engineer    
  • Able to determine priorities / work methods within parameters of assigned duties / projects.
