AmSafe Bridport has an opportunity for an experienced and career driven Engineering Manager to join us at our head office in Bridport Dorset.

AmSafe is a worldwide market leader for cargo restraints and protection systems in aviation and defence; we design, develop & manufacture world-class engineered textile solutions for the safety & securement needs of the global aerospace and defence industries.

Working with major aircraft manufacturers, our products include airframe safety systems, aircraft safety equipment, cargo restraint solutions and RPG protection.

The successful applicant will manage one of our Engineering Departments, ensuring it functions effectively and efficiently for the AmSafe business. Provide the strategic plans, the leadership and the drive for engineering within their Business Unit. Continue the development of our engineers and graduate engineers. Ensure that projects undertaken by Engineering are completed on time and to the satisfaction of our customers, both internal and external, and the certifying authorities.

Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, the role will be office based in Bridport, Dorset. We are looking to appoint a high calibre engineering professional with hands on experience, who knows what excellence looks like, is constantly striving for improvement and can demonstrate a track record of leading and inspiring teams and individuals.

This role would suit an ambitious and driven individual who is looking for an opportunity to take ownership of an engineering function, develop their skills and knowledge and ultimately to become a part of the AmSafe succession plan and progress their career. Extensive previous experience in a similar environment is essential as well as significant experience of leadership and management.

Job Purpose

To manage one of the Engineering Departments, to ensure it functions effectively and efficiently for the AmSafe business. Provide the strategic plans, the leadership and the drive for engineering within their Business Unit. Continue the development of our engineers and graduate engineers. To ensure that projects undertaken by Engineering are completed on time and to the satisfaction of our customers, both internal and external, and the certifying authorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage an Engineering team to deliver AmSafe Bridport’s vision in line with core company values
  • Provide strategic plans, with emphasis on headcount, skills and resources and succession planning. 
  • Ensure that systems and procedures are in place to ensure an effective and efficient Engineering function that fulfils the needs of customers.
  • Ensure KPI’s are in order so that performance can be monitored.
  • Ensure that high standards of engineering professionalism are adopted throughout Engineering, and ensure there is an enthusiastic, open and honest culture.
  • To work closely with the Vice President and senior management team to develop strategic plans to grow the business and maximise its efficiency.
  • To comply with all relevant legal requirements and company policy and procedures.
  • Monitor the standards of the Engineering staff, both informally and via the appraisal system, train them where necessary and advise on appropriate external courses.
  • To represent AmSafe on Engineering matters to customers and other external bodies.
  • To deputise on relevant matters for the Vice President and other members of the senior management team when required.
  • In your absence ensure that others (chiefly through the Lead Engineers) maintain the smooth running of the department during your absence period.
  • To participate in initial design reviews.
  • To take part in regular project reviews with staff from Engineering and other parts of the company and be available for informal consultations between reviews.
  • To provide input during the manufacture of prototypes and during trials.
  • To sign off projects once they are completed to your satisfaction.
  • To promote a culture of continuous improvement and support the continuous improvement programme.
  • To undertake and provide evidence of personal and professional development.
  • To comply with Health and Safety and all relevant legal and company policy and procedures
  • To act appropriately as a member of the AmSafe Commercial management team and perform all other duties as required, directed, or needed to achieve business goals.

Physical Demands

  • Physical demands are moderate factor of this role.  The jobholder is required to carry out testing and operate relevant machinery and tooling.  Sufficient manual dexterity is required to operate a keyboard effectively.

Travel

  • A valid driving licence and willingness to travel worldwide is required.
Specific Skill Requirements

Education

  • The role requires an educational standard to minimum Degree level in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Professional membership / qualification preferred 

         
Experience

  • Considerable evidence of successful leadership and line management experience
  • A minimum of five years’ experience gained in an engineering environment is essential. 
  • Evidence of well developed project management skills and multiple project/task management
  • Experience of FEA and CAD is desirable.
  • The jobholder must be computer literate.
  • A valid driving licence and a willingness to travel in the UK and abroad are also required.

 
Numeric Ability

  • Required to have above average numeric skills and able to understand complex formulae.
  • Required to provide accurate documentation and to analyse information for reports.

  • Leadership and management of an Engineering team in ensuring on time delivery of engineering activities.
  • Success in ensuring the Engineering team achieve KPIs
  • Robust performance and development plans for the Engineering team and a credible succession plan

  • Decision making authority for all responsibilities listed above and as assigned by Vice President for Engineering
  • Accountable to Vice President for Engineering
  • Able to determine priorities within parameters of assigned duties / projects
