Asiana Cargo has signed AmSafe Bridport to deliver the first-ever industry regulated Tie-Down Straps across Asiana’s entire cargo fleet, ensuring the earliest possible compliance with 2016 IATA Regulations.
Required by IATA’s Unit Load Device Regulation Panel (ULD), the 01st January 2016 sees TSO C172 certified straps become mandatory for all air cargo operators. The regulation provides a global standard to increase safety by stating a universal minimum design, performance and quality standard for all air cargo Tie-Down straps.
The contract sees AmSafe Bridport gradually convert all existing straps used by Asiana with their patented TSO C172 certified version, crucially providing the Airline with the earliest possible safety compliance, as well as a 20% lighter product.
AmSafe Bridport Cargo Product Group is the first and only firm to be granted US and European regulatory safety approval for its TSO C172 Cargo Tie-Down Strap.
Asiana Cargo will use the Tie-Down Straps across its entire air cargo fleet to securely hold down air cargo and equipment during transport, ensuring there is no risk to the cargo, plane, air-crew or public.
Mr Jae Hong Lim, from Asiana Airlines, said, ‘Air travel safety is our number one priority and the earliest possible compliance with industry safety regulations is essential. Signing AmSafe Bridport to deliver these TSO C172 Tie Down Straps means we’re ahead of vital industry regulations and have the peace of mind of knowing we’re working with the global industry leader in safety restraint products.’
Mr Joe Ashton, from AmSafe Bridport’s Cargo Product Group, said of the regulatory approval: ‘For too long unregulated straps have sullied the air cargo market. IATA’s mandatory announcement is the absolute right step and means the industry has the regulated straps needed to ensure safe, secure air cargo transportation.’
Mr Ashton continued, ‘Intensive research and design combined with specialist engineering and testing capabilities means our TSO C172 Tie-Down Strap protects all types of air cargo, ensuring our international customers adhere to important future aviation legislation.’
The Technical Standard Order (TSO) was awarded to AmSafe Bridport by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in addition to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
This is the first time both agencies have issued a TSO for this type of product to one supplier, as such no other ULD equipment provider has received both European and US regulatory approval.
Airlines and air cargo operators have been quick to contact AmSafe Bridport to understand more about the new requirements and to place orders for this certified Tie-Down Strap that incorporates the latest TSO C172 standard.
Asiana have joined a list of other major operators who have adopted this new product for their global air cargo operations – ensuring accordance with the latest regulatory requirements, in addition to obtaining the 20% strap weight reduction and an increased product life cycle.
AmSafe Bridport’s TSO C172 Cargo Tie-Down Strap has been designed, tested and regulatory-certified after several years’ research and design. The new TSO requirement for the strap to be tested in simulated ‘gust’ loads, ensures it will remain safely secured during periods when the aircraft is subjected to turbulence, as previously strap types were tested using just one straight pull.
